Fotomontajes  y  Fotomosaicos. Todos estos trabajos fueron tomados en las provincias de La Habana, Matanzas, Cienfuegos y Sancti Spíritus durante  febrero y marzo del 2001. En los fotomontajes vemos las imágenes de carros antiguos, puertas y escenas callejeras uniendose,así contandonos una historia la cual no puede ser presentada en solo una foto. A la vez formando unos patrones visuales que agudizan y amplifican el sentido del tiempo actual en el cual el espectador se envuelve. Los fotomosaicos contienen una gran riqueza de detalles y saturación de color ya que cada foto es un “closeup” de sólo un fragmento del objeto fotografiado, acentuando los pequeños detalles particulares que pasarían por desapercibidos. Observando estos “rompecabezas de fotos”  vemos como el mundo tridimensional está siendo aplanado a uno bidimensional.  Desde los 360°s panorámicos hasta las fachadas de los edificios vemos este efecto cubista de “aplastar” el plano visual tradicional.

Parte de mi filosofía en mi estilo fotográfico es el utilizar muchas fotos, ya sea en conjunto o separadas, para representar y enfatizar la idea deseada. Estas cientos de fotos resfuerzan el cliché “…a picture is worth a thousand words”.  Precisamente el conjunto, la suma, la unión, la repetición, la agrupación y la cohesión  de esas fotos individuales nos lleva aqui a enfrentar y explorar nuevas opciones alternas de visualizar el medio artístico tradicional de la fotografía.  Esta colección de trabajos no son simples fotografías, sino que son una amalgama de éstas, convertidas en verdaderas piezas de arte.

Recientemente el tema de Cuba ha despertado en muchos una cierta curiosidad que no puede pasar por desapecibida.  Ha surgido un interés por todo lo que se relacione con este país debido a las circunstancias que lo ha rodeado en las últimas décadas.  A la vez, los puertorriqueños nos identificamos con la mayoría de los componentes de su cultura, ya que Cuba tiene muchas similaridades con Puerto Rico. Y al igual que nosotros, poseedores de una innata chispa isleña latina, los cubanos le han ofrecido al resto del mundo mucho de que admirar, tanto en la música, en la medicina, en las artes y en el deporte entre otras cosas. 

          Más del 99% de los puertorriqueños nunca han visitado a Cuba ni tendrán la oportunidad de hacerlo, y ésta es una de las razones por la cual estos trabajos visuales tienen tanta importancia.  Existe una necesidad de documentar e ilustrar visualmente ciertas escenas de la realidad de este país vecino a través de la fotografía. Y nuestra prensa y otros canales de información americanizados nunca nos han hecho llegar estampas visuales como éstas aqui exhibidas, ya sea por el bloqueo con E.U. o por la falta de interes o conocimiento.  Por ésta, y por mil razones más, es que he escogido captar con el lente tan importante etapa por la cual Cuba atraviesa.  Como puertorriqueño y como fotógrafo me siento con un deber de presentarles y de exhibir un trabajo artístico de esta clase.  Espero que lo disfruten.       Salvi 02'

      Estos trabajos consisten de múltiples fotografías tamaño 5' x 7' montadas con clavos en planchas de madera. Son unas de las 2,000 fotos capturadas durante febrero y marzo del 2001 en Cuba. 82 de estos montajes fueron exhibidos en febrero del 2002 en Galería Enlaces en el Viejo San Juan, Puerto Rico.

            Photomontages and Photomosaics. All of these works were taken in the provinces of Havana, Matanzas, Cienfuegos, and Sancti Spíritus during a two-week period in February and March, 2001. In the photomontages we see images of old cars, doors, and street scenes come together and tell a story that could not be told  with just one single photograph. At the same time, they form visual patterns that sharpen and amplify the sense of being part of the scene that surrounds the spectator. The photomosaics are rich in detail and color saturation as each picture is a close-up of only one fragment of the photographed object, which accentuates the details that otherwise would go unperceived. Observing these "jigsaw puzzles" we see how the three-dimensional world is being flattened into a two-dimensional world.  From panoramic 360°s to the facades of buildings, the cubist effect is present, leveling down the traditional visual plane.

            One facet of my photographic style is using many photos, together or separately, to represent and emphasize an idea. These hundreds of pictures give a new meaning to the saying, "a picture is worth a thousand words."  And it is precisely this joining, adding, merging, grouping, repetition and cohesion of the individual photos that leads us to face and explore new, alternate options for visualizing the traditional artistic medium of photography. This collection does not comprise mere photographs, rather it is an amalgam of these, transformed into true works of art.

            Recently, the subject of Cuba has aroused in many a certain curiosity that cannot go unnoticed. Interest has been sparked in everything related to this country due to the circumstances surrounding it in the last decades.  Likewise, we Puerto Ricans identify with most components of its culture, since Cuba shares many similarities with Puerto Rico.  Like us, owners of an innate Latin-island spark, Cubans offer the rest of the world many features worthy of admiration, in such areas as music, medicine, the arts, and sports.

            More than 99% of Puerto Ricans have never visited Cuba, nor will they have the opportunity to do so, and this is one of the reasons these images are so important.  There is a need to visually document and illustrate certain scenes from the reality of our neighboring country through photography. And most important, our traditional press mediums and the rest of the "americanized" channels of information have never brought us visual stamps like these exhibited here, whether because of the U.S. blockade or just plain lack of interest or knowledge of the situation.  For this reason, and hundreds more, I have chosen to capture through my lens this very important phase which Cuba is enduring.  As a Puerto Rican and as photographer, I feel an obligation to create and exhibit an artistic work of this kind. These works consist of multiple 5' x 7' photographs mounted with nails on wooden boards. These are a selection of the 2,000 plus photos taken in Cuba between February and March, 2001. Eighty-two of these montages were exhibited in February, 2002 in Galería Enlaces in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico.
